Interim management is the temporary provision of management resources and skills. Interim management can be seen as the short-term assignment of a proven heavyweight interim executive manager to manage a period of transition, crisis or change within an organisation.
In this situation, a permanent role may be unnecessary or impossible to find on short notice. Additionally, there may be no one internally who is suitable for, or available to take up, the position in question. A consultant is a professional who provides professional or expert advice in a particular area, such as security (electronic or physical), management, accountancy, law, human resources, marketing (and public relations), finance, engineering, science or any of many other specialised fields. The overall impact of a consultant is that clients have access to deeper levels of expertise than would be feasible for them to retain in-house and can therefore purchase only as much service from the outside consultant as desired.
Management consulting indicates both the industry and the practice of helping organisations improve their performance, primarily through the analysis of existing organisational problems and the development of plans for improvement. The experts can also provide organisational change management assistance, the development of coaching skills, technology implementation and strategy development or operational improvement services.
Management consultants generally bring their own proprietary methodologies or frameworks to guide the identification of problems, which serve as the basis for recommendations for more effective or efficient ways of performing work tasks.

Marketing strategy
A company asked PUM’s assistance in promoting a product called video conferencing. After a quick orientation, the expert discovered that there was no marketing plan. The company was aware of the term ‘marketing’ but there was a lack of knowledge in that area. The expert drew up a marketing plan to map out the possibilities of increasing sales. He also advised the company to organise two user meetings per year with clients to assess the user experience and evaluate additional new requirements for its product. It was also necessary that company staff members themselves would use video conferencing to experience the benefits of the product. After his mission, the management informed the expert that they were carrying out the recommendations and that they are very pleased with the results.
Introducing technological innovative solutions
A number of small enterprises are operating together in introducing and implementing technological innovative solutions in the fields of telecommunication and traffic control. The projects are commissioned by the government and from private enterprises. PUM was asked to review the strategy and the HRM policies. After studying documents and conducting interviews with the management, the expert could make recommendations. These recommendations covered a considerable number of topics such as working on a worst-case scenario, working on the strategy in connection with the day- to-day practice, strengthening the strategy in the organisation and clarifying the relationship between the different companies in the group. After a few meetings, the management began the implementation process of the recommendations. The PUM expert will continue to collaborate with the company on these matters.
Review of organisational structure
The company asked a PUM expert to analyse the organisational structure in order to help it become more professional. The company manufactures machined castings mainly for the tractor industry. It therefore has two major activities: casting and machining. The company was doing well in the market and had sufficient orders. After the analysis, the expert advised setting up a new organogram for a more balanced distribution of responsibilities, a more formal structure of the organisation concerning decision-making and a system of annual planning to make the performance achieved visible for discussion. He provided a detailed plan with a time frame of twelve months for the necessary changes. After the visit, the company had a well- defined description of the problems, a plan of action and a time frame. In order to obtain an objective finance plan, it will be necessary to provide a PUM expert in the field of finance/ administration/accountancy at short notice.
