Baking opportunities in Armenia

In the city of Gyumri, Armenia, the Caritas Aregak Foundation creates opportunities for people who are often excluded from the labour market. For many years, the organisation has supported children and young adults with disabilities as well as vulnerable families through educational programmes, therapy services, and community initiatives.

One of their key initiatives is the Aregak Bakery and Coffee Shop. More than a bakery, it is a social enterprise where young adults with disabilities receive professional training and meaningful employment in a safe and supportive environment. As one of the first workplaces of this kind in Armenia, the bakery also raises awareness about equal opportunities and disability rights.

To strengthen the bakery as a sustainable social enterprise, the foundation collaborated with PUM expert Bert Steehouder.During his visit, Bert worked closely with the bakery team and provided hands-on training in croissant and pastry production. Together they introduced new varieties of bread and pastries and improved baking techniques to ensure greater product consistency and quality. The expert also advised on ways to increase the bakery’s visibility and communicate its social mission more effectively.

The project has already delivered results. The bakery expanded its product range and staff gained new professional skills and confidence. The improved assortment is expected to attract more customers, particularly during festive periods, strengthening the bakery’s sustainability.

Looking ahead

The Caritas Aregak Foundation is now expanding its activities through Green Aregak, a social enterprise focused on sustainable agriculture. In eco gardens, young people with disabilities grow organic tomatoes that are processed into sun dried tomato products.

As the organisation plans to scale production and enter new markets, it faces challenges related to marketing, quality standards, and efficient production processes. In an upcoming PUM project, experts will collaborate with the team to strengthen marketing, improve production organisation, and support the development of new sustainable products.

Together, these initiatives show how social enterprises can combine economic activity with meaningful employment opportunities in the local community.
