The Environment programme promotes resilient ecosystems by connecting energy, water and resource solutions within existing businesses. By advancing renewable energy, efficient water use and circular approaches, SMEs reduce environmental impact and improve performance. Through collaboration, knowledge transfer and training, the programme contributes to climate resilience, public health and sustainable economic development, often in areas such as agri- and horticulture, food processing and tourism.

Energy – powering sustainable growth

Access to reliable and affordable energy is essential for business and ecosystem development. At the same time, the transition away from fossil fuels is urgent. PUM collaborates with SMEs to introduce renewable energy solutions and improve efficiency. This includes applications such as solar energy, small-scale hydropower, biomass and clean cooking, as well as solar-powered irrigation and solar drying technologies. In many cases, relatively simple measures can significantly reduce costs and emissions. Training focuses on solar systems and the installation and maintenance of mid-voltage electrical infrastructure. By combining technical solutions with practical implementation, businesses strengthen their operations while contributing to a more sustainable power system.

Water – valuing every drop

Water is critical for health, production and livelihoods, yet increasingly scarce and vulnerable to pollution. PUM collaborates with partners across the full water cycle, focusing on water treatment and quality, infrastructure and capacity building. Projects address topics such as irrigation, wastewater treatment, water reuse and system management in both urban and rural contexts. An integrated approach ensures solutions are practical, locally adapted and contribute to long-term, sustainable water management.

Waste & Environment – recovering resources

Growing waste volumes and resource scarcity require a shift towards circular approaches. PUM collaborates with SMEs and institutions to reduce waste, promote recycling and reuse, recover resources, and improve collection, processing and safe disposal. Waste streams are increasingly treated as valuable inputs, for example through composting or waste-to-energy solutions. Alongside technical improvements, attention is given to organisation, logistics, awareness, environmental protection and regulation, and system and policy development. This supports sustainable practices that deliver lasting ecological and economic benefits.

Strengthening  business foundations

The programme also includes experts with extensive experience in general strategy and business planning areas. They collaborate with entrepreneurs and organisations to strengthen management, marketing, finance and operations. By combining technical expertise with general business support, PUM contributes to sustainable growth and resilient organisations.
