- Growing Opportunity for Tanzania’s Cashew Farmers
In the heart of Tanzania’s Lindi region, the Taruchina Cashew Growers Association is working to improve lives through sustainable cashew farming. Formed by dedicated local farmers, Taruchina has set its sights on enhancing the quality and quantity of its harvest while moving beyond raw cashew sales to provide value-added products. Their goals are creating local jobs, fueling economic growth, and advocating for fair practices in the cashew industry.
PUM partnership
To realise these ambitions, Taruchina partnered with PUM to strengthen their cashew processing capabilities and enter the export market. Through this collaboration, PUM’s expert Gerrit Jan Schepers collaborated with Taruchina in refining processing techniques, implementing quality control, and exploring new markets. This partnership is paving the way for Taruchina to boost its income, provide high-quality cashews, and solidify its role in the value chain.
Project Impact
The project has unlocked exciting possibilities for Taruchina, laying the foundation for growth and greater access to international markets.
Anticipated results include:
Enhanced Processing: Improved facilities and skills to create premium cashew products.
Market Expansion: New export pathways, potentially increasing revenue, and distribution reach.
Community Impact: Boosting local economic growth by creating jobs and uplifting farmers.
Socially and ecologically, the benefits reach even further:
Social Impact: Empowering farmers—especially women and youth—through increased income and a stronger role in the cashew industry.
Environmental Impact: Promoting sustainable farming practices that protect local ecosystems.
