Solar Energy Masterclass in the Northern Cape
Mining company Anglo American Zimele and PUM have partnered to launch a pilot Solar Energy Masterclass. PUM representative Akash Singh and four PUM experts from the Energy sector, developed this online course for Small, Medium, and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs) in Northern Cape mining communities. The masterclass equips local businesses with vital solar energy knowledge and practical skills, enabling them to incorporate solar services into their offerings. Insights from this pilot project will inspire similar initiatives in mining communities across South Africa and possibly beyond South African borders.
Anglo American Zimele is an arm of the pioneering global mining company, acknowledging its role in promoting economic growth and sustainable community empowerment. With a rich history in mining, South Africa relies on the mining industry as a backbone of the country’s economy. The company is deeply committed to minimising their environmental footprint while maximising their positive impact on communities. They do this by developing emerging black businesses, empowering entrepreneurs, and supporting Small, Medium, and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs) to make a difference in their communities. This mission is reflected in their name ‘Zimele’ which means ‘Stand on your own’ in Nguni languages.
A collaborative approach
PUM representative Akash Singh explains: “Embracing change is at the core of Zimele’s values. Considering the challenges of load shedding and the lingering effects of COVID-19, they entered into a partnership with PUM to launch a pilot Solar Energy Masterclass. This visionary project aims to transform the Northern Cape mining communities through education, empowerment, and diversification.” PUM Energy experts, Eelko Brevoord, Kees de Glopper, Martijn Schootstra and Theo van der Meer assembled the building blocks for this pilot project.
Implementation
The pilot programme aims to train around 25 local companies in the Northern Cape, focusing on Sishen and Kolomela communities. Akash continues: “Achieving the ultimate objective of fostering sustainable solar energy implementation within the mining communities involves a structured approach. This approach is divided into three distinct phases: sharing knowledge, hands-on experience, and individual advice.”
Impact
Up till now the pilot masterclass is a real success. Akash proudly summarises: “Approximately 50 SMMEs enrolled in this innovative class. The first two lessons on energy saving and the basics of solar and grid-connected systems proved to be highly successful. Attendance exceeded 45 participants in each session, with 60 delegates in the first class.”
